Repousse (re-po-say).  What you are looking at is repousse, which is hammered sheet work.  In this case you are looking at bronze and aluminum.  We hand forge (hot) many architectural projects with aluminum alloys.  Once forged and assembled, the gate or railing is then sandblasted and painted just as you would steel.  Aluminum never rusts.  The aluminum we use (typically alloy 6061) in it's hardened state has one third less strength than that of steel.  So we increase the thickness of the aluminum by a third.  The end result is a project which looks better because it is thicker and a project that has the strength of steel.  Plus, the project will never rust.  This creates a win-win situation.
